Maker Journal #4 – Speaker Call - Google Expeditions with Eric Lawson

For my fourth Maker Journal, I chose one of our guest speaker calls, Google Expeditions with Eric Lawson on October 2, 2017 from 3 :30-4:30 . Eric Lawson is the Director of Technology and Libraries for York, Maine School Department. My goal with selecting this technology is to update my toolbox with more modern tool sets and to consider as part of the Maker Journal how this tackles one of the four course questions; “ How might we design learning to embrace principles of computational thinking?” Overview Eric Lawson started the program for York, Maine School Department by signing up for the Expedition Pioneer Program.   The program offered by Google begins with sending an expedition team to the selected school with the purpose of providing a Google Expeditions Kit and expertise to jump start the schools' program.   The great news for schools who want to explore the program is there is no charge once you are accepted in the program. Maker Journal #2 – Speaker Call - Drones

For my second Maker Journal, I chose one of our guest speaker calls, Drones - with Dan LeClair on September 11, 2017 from 3:30-4:30 .  My goal with selecting this technology is to update my toolbox with more modern toolsets and to consider as part of the Maker Journal how this tackles one of the four course outcomes; ‘ Model innovation, iteration, and reflection through personal practice, and engagement with existing research.’ OVERVIEW Our guest speaker, Dan LeClair, provided information on the University of Maine at Augusta program for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), a.k.a. drones.  Dan is one of the courses coordinators and a colonel in the Civil Air Patrol.  Dan indicated the Bachelor of Science degree in aviation will soon have an option of an unmanned aircraft systems concentration, in addition to a certificate.  It was interesting to hear the age range of students in the program; ages 16 to 86.  Dan noted that UAVs support student learning...

OVERVIEW For my first Maker Journal, I chose Code Academy.  My objective was to gain experience with the HTML ( H yper T ext M arkup L anguage) and CSS ( C ascading S tyle S heets) software development tools using the two segments offered shown thru Code Academy, see below: Learn HTML (3 Hours) Learn CSS (9 Hours) HTML is a programming language that powers the web, which provides a means of communication to others in the form of webpages.  Like any other language, once you master it, you can begin to create content, whether that is simple websites or more complex web applications.  HTML provides the structure of the webpage, outlining the elements each webpage will contain. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) provides the layout and design of the webpages by providing functions to create visually engaging webpages.
